Russian forces have launched a major naval exercise north of Kaliningrad, deploying multiple warships and more than ten aircraft to drill bombing runs, defensive manoeuvres and coordinated fleet operations.
The exercise is widely read as a direct signal from the Kremlin a response to large-scale NATO drills currently underway near Gotland, the Swedish island whose strategic position in the Baltic has made it a focal point for both alliances.
The NATO exercise involves more than 6,000 troops and 20 warships, and comes against a backdrop of repeated sabotage targeting undersea infrastructure across European waters attacks Western officials have increasingly attributed to Russian-linked actors. The drills are intended to project the growing collective strength of a NATO alliance that has expanded and consolidated rapidly since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
With both sides conducting parallel exercises in close proximity, the risk of miscalculation in the Baltic remains elevated.
